Early-career faculty to teach in the English language BA International Studies of Leiden University

The BA in International Studies targets the study of the regions of the world in their global context. The degree programme consists of three main elements: 1. core courses that introduce disciplinary concepts and the international setting, and international and comparative electives, 2. area courses that focus on a selected region from a disciplinary, and increasingly interdisciplinary, perspective, and 3. language courses that prepare students for access to the cultural context of their region of choice. The core concepts, ideas and methods are taken from various disciplinary approaches, principally history, cultural disciplines and linguistics, political science, and economics.

The study programme is exclusively taught and examined in English. The BA in International Studies aims to create an international classroom with Dutch and international students and lecturers. The BA in International Studies is located at the Campus The Hague of Leiden University in the centre of The Hague.

Teaching for the BA in International Studies will be done by academic staff already in post in the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University, together with a new team of university lecturers in the early stages of their career. Four University Lecturers (Universitair Docenten m/f) (38 hours per week)

Duties
The lecturers will be expected to play an active role in the development and teaching of a new degree programme, the BA in International Studies, offered at the Campus The Hague of Leiden University, by the Faculty of Humanities. Teaching duties cover a broad range of tutorials with the courses offered in the degreeprogramme. Students will be taught in mixed groups with specialized interests in all of the regions and disciplines represented in the degree. In addition, the lecturers will mark and assess student assignments and exams, supervise student papers and theses, organize extra-curricular activities, carry out pastoral duties, and contribute to the administration of the programme. The lecturers are expected to be able and willing to teach and supervise beyond their own specialization. In time, the lecturers also will be given the opportunity to take full responsibility for one or more courses in the degree.

Depending on their disciplinary orientation and regional specialization, successful candidates will be appointed in one of the following institutes of the Faculty of Humanities: History, Area Studies, Cultural Disciplines, and Linguistics. Teaching will be primary, but the lecturers will also be expected to engage in original research and apply for research funding relevant to International Studies. Area Studies
We expect candidates to be specialized in and to have a deep linguistic and cultural knowledge of modern Asia or (preferably) the modern Middle-East. Candidates should have a broad, transnational vision and disciplinary training in the social sciences or humanities. Expertise in political economy or international political economy may be an advantage.

History
We expect candidates to have been trained as a historian or with a proven record of historical expertise. Preferably their knowledge fits one of the research profiles of the institutethat focus on the period since 1500. Key themes are globalisation, colonial history, collective identities and transnational networks, political cultures, migration and urban history, with a broad interest in comparative and contemporary history.

Cultural Disciplines
For the field of cultural disciplines we seek candidates who are specialized in the field of languages and culture studies of (a) modern European language(s), cultural studies, art history, film studies, or comparative literature, of the modern period. Special emphasis is put on the dynamics intrinsic to cultural objects, which are seen as forms of cultural practice in art and literature within wider societal contexts. Candidates are expected to be able to participate in the institute’s intercultural or intermedial forms of research.

Linguistics
Candidates should have a PhD in linguistics with a specialization in one of the branches of sociolinguistics in the broad sense: society and language use, culture and language use (including anthropological linguistics) cross-cultural and intercultural communication, public discourse etc. The research of the lecturer should fit into the research programmeLanguage Diversity in the World. The successful applicant will be a member of the research groupLanguage Description and Language Use.

Application requirements
Recent Ph.D. in hand or a confirmed final examination (viva, oral defense) date before the start of the appointment;
Formal training and expertise in the humanities or the social sciences, including but not limited to history, area studies, political science and international relations, economics, cultural and social disciplines, linguistics or related disciplines, and openness to interdisciplinary work; Comparative international outlook; Regional specialization is open; Preferable experience in teaching and supervision; Near-native speaker of English; Non-Dutch speaking individuals will be expected to learn Dutch within two years;

Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not possess this qualification or its equivalent, the Institute will offer support in obtaining it.

These posts have been created with support from the national fund for sustainable humanities intended to attract early career scholars to teaching and research in Dutch universities.

The appointments is for 38 hours per week in temporary employment for one year, to be extended for the remaining two years upon positive evaluation, with the possibility of extension thereafter. The position corresponds to the position of University Lecturer in the University system of job profiles (UFO). The lecturers will be based at the campus of Leiden University in The Hague.

The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary is € 2.379 (scale 10) to € 4.374 (scale 11)for a full working week. You will receive a holiday allowance amounting to 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of your yearly income.
